Reputable programs consistently prioritise sustainable, locally led work over quick, photogenic projects designed mainly for social media, carefully avoiding tasks that could otherwise be done just as well, or better, by local workers themselves, and provide honest, thorough preparation to volunteers about what the role will actually involve.
Prospective volunteers genuinely benefit from asking direct, pointed questions about training, oversight, and long term impact before committing to any program at all, since good intentions alone never guarantee that a particular program actually does the genuine good it publicly claims to do in its own promotional materials and brochures.
