The Anatomy of a Genuine Thank You Note

A genuine thank you note tends to follow a fairly simple underlying shape once you look closely at several good examples: a clear statement of thanks stated plainly and without hedging, a specific detail that shows real attention was actually paid to the moment, and a brief note of impact explaining why the act genuinely mattered to the person writing the note in the first place.
None of these three elements need to be especially long or elaborate to do their job properly. A note can be only a handful of sentences in total length and still contain all three parts comfortably, provided each sentence is doing genuine work of its own rather than simply filling space with empty, generic pleasantries that ultimately say very little to the reader.
What separates a genuinely sincere note from a merely generic one is not length at all, in the end, but rather precision of detail throughout. The more exactly the note reflects what actually happened between the two people involved, the more sincere it will ultimately feel to the person reading it days or even years later.
