Short term volunteering suits sudden or entirely predictable spikes in need particularly well, a single event, a busy seasonal rush, an urgent emergency response effort, offering organisations a quick, welcome surge of extra help without requiring any ongoing commitment whatsoever from the people who simply show up to assist for a day or two.
Long term volunteering, by clear and obvious contrast, gradually builds genuine relationships and real institutional knowledge over time, often becoming absolutely essential to an organisation's daily functioning in ways that a short term role, however helpful it might be in the moment, simply never really manages to achieve on its own over time.
Neither particular form is inherently better than the other one in any general or absolute sense, since they genuinely serve rather different underlying needs within an organisation's own structure. Understanding which kind a role actually requires helps volunteers commit appropriately from the very outset and helps organisations plan realistically around what they can genuinely expect to receive.
